CATS

CATS! When one hears this word could think of the mischievous and lazy creatures; or to the marvelous, delicate and beautiful animals; or to the musical from 1981. The musical was recently brought to life in London’s West End and took over the theatrical/musical world both in Europe and in New York on Broadway. And now, it arrived in Luxembourg, at Rockhal.
Until seeing this masterpiece, I thought that I saw a lot of musicals and theatre plays not to be super impressed… I was WRONG. Since I walked into the room, the extra detailed décor caught my eyes. I didn’t even have a chance to get over it when the play started, that I was already blown away by the live orchestrated music and surreal coordination in movement and singing.
I have to be honest, the first 10 minutes were frightening and creepy for me, and I believe it was intended. The ‘cats’ were snickering around the public and singing whispery in the dim lights. After that, the mood started to be more comfortable and the bubble was created: for a couple of hours I actually thought there were cats playing and singing and dancing in front of us. When I realized that the show was going to end in a few minutes, I felt sad. I wanted it to never end. To watch them dance and sing and tell their stories of ‘Jellicle cats’* forever and ever.
I was surprised by the many different elements of music and dance combined in this musical. Some genres that I have seen before in a musical, but not quite this way. I will not ruin the surprise of telling what and which.
I recommend with all my heart this musical. There are still tickets left for the next representations on: 06.02, 07.02 and 08.02 from 2000, on 09.02 (Saturday) from 1500 and 2000 and on 10.02 (Sunday) from 1400 and 1830 at Rockhal Belval.

*P.S: If you are curious what “Jellicle cats” means, I got you. The word “Jellicle” first appears in “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T. S. Elliot, specifically the poem “The Song of the Jellicles”. The name “Jellicle cat” is derived from an attempt by T.S. Eliot’s infant niece to say “dear little cat”
