‘Pervert Park’: a dive in the unknown

An uncommon documentary to see at Luxembourg Film Festival !

Pervert Park is an uncommon documentary. Made by a young couple of danish people, this film represents a real dive in the unknown. For them, as well as for the audience. Seldom if ever one gets the chance to listen to life’s path of sex offenders trying to understand their acts and work on it.

In order to spend time and conduct interviews with the residents of this park based in Florida, Frida and Lasse Barkfors spent four years to get in touch and gain trust of the sex offenders so that they could share their stories with us.

74 minutes will never be enough to portray the complex lives of the residents of “Pervert Park”, as the local neighbours nickname the trailers’ park. Each person benefits from a two-year stay to learn how to understand her/his faults, and how to live with it as well as to reinsert herself / himself in the society.
As for the audience, a large scale of emotions appears as the testimonies hit the screen: questioning thoughts, disgust, compassion, sadness, anger and all the time genuine interest. The film directors got those exact same feelings as they interviewed the residents.

With lots of humbleness and still on-going disarray toward these confessions, Frida and Lasse Barkfors answered questions from the public at the LuxFilmFest. It is only the second screening of the film. The first got awarded with the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Impact at the Sundance Festival 2015 in the USA.

If the film gets such a good response, it is because the approach is totally honest and unpolemical. As a matter of fact, Frida describes her process in gathering testimonies as a respectful one: “we didn’t want to abuse anyone”. Odd choice of words…
