Stupid Fucking Bird

Modern theatre has many thanks to give to all the classics that managed to break boundaries as well as conservative mentalities. Out of all the great minds of the past centuries, Aaron Posner has chosen Anton Cehov’s “The Seagull” to recreate in his own vision. He has chosen to bring a modern twist to a classic that, in essence speaks about how classics should be discarded and make place for the new.

Even since the beginning of the play we were shocked by the complexity of the décor of “Stupid Fucking Bird” as well as the way the play was put into action: we saw the seagull counterparts of the characters we were going to see which was a surreal take on an otherwise classic and hard to touch piece. Throughout the play we managed to still see the dark humorous wit of the fabled Russian writer with additions from Aaron Posner himself.

We also had small incursions with the actors themselves during the representation which sucked us in even more on the subject as well as the action. Every once in a while, the characters would actually reveal that they knew whom they were: characters in a play. This brought a certain dynamicity and closeness to everything.

The play was a huge sequence of surprises. We were expecting a boring take on an old classic we have seen a couple of times but were pleasantly surprised to actually be surprised by the director at every step. I will not ruin the gift of the excitement of the unexpected, but I can recommend you go to this play. It teaches you some important lessons that are carried over from “The Seagull” but is also entertaining and can best be described as a classic in a rollercoaster.

You know what is going to happen in broad lines, but you don’t know everything that is going to come to be.

This play has three more representations in English this month, on 17th, 22nd and 23rd January at Théâtre des Capucins. For more information, click here.
