Medieval festival Dudelange

Last weekend the biggest medieval festival of the Greater Region took place in Dudelange. With brightest sunshine, the festival was visited by many people and it offered entertainment for every age group.

While entering the area of the festival, one is not aware of the huge size of the whole event. The first street opens right after the entry. It offers self-woven baskets, jewellery, costumes, food and much more. Only on the way to the backfields, the visitors are able to overview parts of the event’s area and get a look of all the tents on the lower meadows. While going down the path, activities to participate (such as the juggler’s school) are placed at the side.  Especially younger visitors have the possibility to make some music with old instruments. Stilt walkers and costumed people are crossing the way and enrich the colourful impression of the festival. Not only taverns and market stalls are open, there are performances as well, for example tournaments with riding knights in full armour.

One can try out several activities like archery, stone working or aiming-games like conquering a castle by using catapults for certain targets. In the background different songs are played by several musicians who perform on one of the different stages. In costumes and with special instruments and songtexts, of course.

It is a merry event and the smallest visitors can even climb in a hand-operated roundabout or a small Ferris wheel. A special atmosphere is created by music and costumes.

All in all, I can only recommend of visiting the festival the next time, minor problem is in my opinion the connection with public transport. At the (on the website recommended) train station was no sign placed and it was quite difficult to find the festival. My tip for visitors: there are special busses that stop right at the Buetscheburger Buergfest.
